And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.
—Mark 10:13-16
A few days ago, Angel and I celebrated our first month of successful courtship. By the grace of God, we got through a whole month together without crisis or disaster.
But jokes aside, our one month was special because it helped me realize how undeserving I am of just about everything. When God sent Angel to me, it was the first time out of my selfish heart did I feel like I truly did not deserve any of God’s gifts. Angel has been so overwhelmingly good to me, kind to me, caring over me, and sanctifying for me.
I did not deserve to be with Angel, and I couldn’t help but ask God why He sent her in my direction.
And it really put my relationship with Jesus into perspective—the greatest gift God gave me came before Angel and even before the foundations of the world… and infinitely better.
Jesus gave Himself to me: His gospel, His story, His life, and the cross He carried is the greatest show of undeserved grace the universe has ever seen. Everything that an accuser can bring before the throne to testify against me, every small lie and violation to God I have committed and will commit has been completely absorbed by Christ. Though I was the one calling for His crucifixion, Christ pleaded with the Father for my forgiveness. Though I continue to ignore and refuse to commune with God, Jesus prayed perfectly in my place. In Him, I am made holy, blameless, spotless, and free of charge.
I was as guilty as Jesus was innocent, and still He came to my rescue.
I pray that God will continue to manifest Himself in my heart as well as Angel’s, and that no matter what happens between us, He will be the same tomorrow as He was yesterday and is today.
For this I know: that the LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. There will come a day when every tear will be wiped away, and He will lead us there by still waters.
While on earth, Jesus experienced hunger (Matt. 4:2) and thirst (John 19:28), showed compassion (Matt. 9:36), was tired (John 4:6), felt sorrow to the point of weeping (John 11:35), and grew in wisdom (Luke 2:52). Yet, in all of his humanness, Jesus never sinned (Heb. 4:15).
To you alone belongs the highest praise.
